The Bible - Genesis - Chapter 22

Years pass and Isaac grows into an adolescent. God comes to Abraham again and this time commands him to take Isaac to the land of Moriah and on one of the rocks there to kill him and give him as a burnt offering to the Lord. The next morning, Abraham promptly obeys. The boy, the father and the servants arrive at the foot of the rock and Isaac, oblivious to his doom, carries the wood on which his body is to be burned to the top of the rock. He innocently asks his father, “where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” Apparently the practice is one with which he is familiar. Abraham replies simply that, “God will see to the sheep”

Abraham lays out the wood for the fire, binds his son (who by this time must be getting a little suspicious) and makes ready to kill him. Just before the fatal deed, an angel calls out to Abraham to stay his hand. A ram is provided as a substitute for Isaac and in return for his act of supreme loyalty is promised for a FOURTH time that he will be made the progenitor of a great race of men. The spot where this sacrifice was to take place is now known as the temple mount.

At the chapter conclusion, Abraham receives word that his brother Nahor has had 12 children born unto him.
