The Bible - Genesis - Chapter 21

Finally, in the hundredth year of his life, Abraham has a son by his wife. His name was Isaac and per God’s commandment, he was circumcised on the 8th day of his life. As soon as Isaac is weaned (at the age of 2 or 3), however, Sarah turns against Hagar and Ishmael. She bids Abraham to throw them both out of the camp. At first reluctant, Abraham finally does so after some encouragement from God. Abraham provides them with only a single water skin and a piece of bread for their wanderings in the desert, a certain sentence of death.

Despite that fact that her son at this time should be 16 or 17 years old, Hagar acts mysteriously as if her son is in fact still an infant. Her supplies exhausted, she leaves him under a bush to die and begins sobbing at some distance. An angel of the Lord comes upon her and brings her word that her son will bring forth a great nation and shows her a nearby well. The two survive and the mother later arranges a marriage between her son and an Egyptian.

Meanwhile, Abraham forms a pact with Abimelech and acquires rights to a well he has dug in the area. He seals this pact with 7 ewes. Abraham abides in this land for a long time afterwards.
